Preparing for TEF ?

Here are a a bunch of tips, links and general insights to help you prepare for TEF.
How does TEF work ?
The TEF is a globally recognized French proficiency exam designed to assess a candidate’s ability to understand and communicate in both written and spoken French. Its results are often required for immigration purposes (particularly for Canada and Quebec), higher education applications, and professional opportunities.
Structure of the Exam
The TEF follows a modular format, meaning candidates can choose the sections they need according to their goals. The exam includes five components:
-
Reading Comprehension — 60 minutes (40 multiple-choice questions)
-
Listening Comprehension — 40 minutes (40 multiple-choice questions)
-
Written Expression — 60 minutes (tasks such as essays or formal letters)
-
Oral Expression / Speaking — 15 minutes, including two role-play activities with an examiner
When should I sign up for TEF prep classes ?
While many people offering TEF classes may advise you to start as early as possible, I strongly believe it is best to begin TEF preparation after completing at least a B1 level in French.
In my opinion, success in the TEF is not only about knowing the language mechanically. It also requires a certain familiarity with the culture, implicit meaning, and the nuances that French naturally carries. These elements become much clearer around the B2 level, in all honesty.
That said, if you are working within a tighter timeline, completing B1 generally gives you the grammatical and communicative foundations needed to begin targeted TEF preparation with confidence.
